Consumer Electronics Take Center Stage in AI-Driven Shopping Revolution

New Study Also Shows 60% of AI Users Shifting Away from Traditional Search

By Pete Blackshaw

As the co-founder of two analytics startups (the first acquired by Nielsen), nothing excites me more than seeing how technology empowers consumers with deeper insights and greater decision-making power. Our latest BrandRank.AI study, drawing from over 1,000 consumers and countless AI search queries, reveals a fundamental shift in shopping behavior driven by generative AI. The results confirm our thesis around the "Answer Economy"– a new paradigm where AI isn't just suggesting products, but fundamentally transforming how consumers make purchasing decisions.

The Electronics Sweet Spot

The data shows that 50% of consumers using generative AI for shopping are gravitating toward electronics – making it the most sought-after category for AI-assisted purchases. This timing couldn't be more relevant as we head into CES 2025 next week.

Trust, Platforms, and Privacy: A Complex Picture

One of our most striking findings concerns platform-specific behavior. On Perplexity, for instance, 67% of users have made purchases based on AI recommendations.

However, the trust landscape is nuanced. While 66% of users view generative AI platforms as trustworthy, 63% express concerns about data transparency and privacy. It's a tension that perfectly captures where we are in the AI adoption curve.

A few days ago, I decided to pressure-test some of my assumptions by asking my LinkedIn followers if they leveraged AI tools for shopping guidance or product instruction (my favorite usage) just over the holidays. Here’s the count after 63 votes.

The Search Revolution Is Here

Perhaps most telling from the more formal study is what's happening to traditional search: nearly 60% of generative AI users report relying less on conventional search engines. This isn't just about finding information faster – it's about finding better answers. The shift toward the Answer Economy represents a fundamental change in how consumers expect to interact with information.

Surprising Demographic Insights

While younger adults (18-44) and higher-income groups (>$75,000) are leading in AI adoption, we found an unexpected twist: users aged 65+ show the highest engagement (62%) in product research. This suggests AI shopping assistance has broad generational appeal.

CES 2025 Preview: AI Predictions

To complement the survey research, we took a deeper dive into how these “Answer Engines” see the electronics future. Our cross-platform analysis of how leading AI systems predict CES 2025's innovations revealed three dominant themes:

  • Next-generation GPU technology (Nvidia RTX 5090 appeared as a top-3 prediction across five platforms)

  • Advanced display innovations (including LG's QNED Evo and bendable displays)

  • AI-powered home devices (from robots to smart appliances)

Perhaps most intriguing is how each AI platform shows its own distinct personality in these predictions – from practical, Edison-like approaches prioritizing market-ready innovations to more transformative visions of the future. You'll see these unique perspectives mapped out in the attached chart, giving us a fascinating multi-lens view of tomorrow's technology.

If you run this analysis manually, you may see variation as we ran this model a few days ago, and AI answer engines are getting better and better at absorbing fresh content.

Looking Ahead

With 52% of current generative AI users planning to increase their usage in the next six months, we're clearly just at the beginning of this transformation. The Answer Economy isn't just changing how we shop – it's redefining our relationship with information itself.
